@--One kilo of assam laksa? No sweat!--@

George Town (The Star/ANN) - For self-confessed assam laksa lover Lee Ying Ying, finishing her bowl in two minutes and 58 seconds is a "nail-biting" affair.

The 29-year-old nail artist's time to finish a bowl of Penang assam laksa, weighing 1kg, was enough to beat 11 others in an eating competition for the dish ranked seventh in the world's 50 most delicious food.

Her herculean effort in finishing the portion meant for two people earned her a month's worth of assam laksa sponsored by a stall at Joo Hooi Cafe in Penang Road.

"I practised for the competition by eating the dish four times a week.

"I love laksa and now I can eat it every day for one month.

"I didn't expect to win. All I knew was that I had to finish as fast as possible. It was very spicy and sour too, just the way I like it," she said after receiving her prizes from state Local Government and Traffic Management Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow at Komtar Walk yesterday.

Lee, who is from Butterworth, also walked away with a buffet dinner for four courtesy of E&O Hotel, a certificate, a hamper and a medal.

The contestants were divided into two groups and each of them were given 10 minutes to finish their bowl of assam laksa.

Most of the participants sweated it out, braving the heat and spiciness of the dish to try to beat each other.

The competition was organised by the Culinary Arts Centre (CAC).

CAC principal Bruce Lee said the event was held to mark the ranking of the dish as the seventh among the world's 50 most delicious food in a CNN International survey.
