1) THUNDERSTORM WREAKS HAVOC IN SUNGAI PETANI AND BALING, 147 HOUSES DAMAGED
SUNGAI PETANI, Aug 10 (Bernama) -- One hundred and forty five houses in
Taman Bandar Baru and Sungai Lalang were damaged as a thunderstorm wreaked havoc
here at about 2.30pm today.
Habsah Ahmad, 57, one of the victim whose house was severely damaged,
incurring loses estimated at RM20,000, said the thunderstorm started at about
2.30pm after a slight drizzle.
"All of us were at home when the incident happened. I heard noises that
sounded like a strong wind was blowing and even before realising what was
happening, I saw my roof being ripped off.
"Once the roof disappeared, my hall, bed, clothes, telephone and almost
everything in the house was wet," she told Bernama when met at her house.
Another victim, Norizah Saad, 53, said she was in Alor Setar when the
incident happened and estimated her losses at RM30,000.
Asmida Shabidi, 20, said the wind speed resembled a typhoon and that it was
a very frightening experience but was grateful that her house was not damaged.

Meanwhile, Saharudin Hamid, a Sungai Petani Municipality councilor said he
had urged all the victims to lodge police reports as a requirement for the
Welfare Department to provide assistance.
He added that though more than 145 houses were believed to have been damaged
in the thunderstorm, only 145 had come forward to lodge police reports.
Saharudin said four families whose houses were severely damaged, would
temporarily seek shelter at a hall in the Taman Bandar Baru Mosque.
In Baling, a senior citizen and another family of five, cheated death when a
tree fell on their houses during a thunderstorm that struck at about 4pm,
causing extensive damage to the two houses.
Siah Yunus, 94, was alone in her house at Kampung Carok Sik, Mukim Pulai
when the incident happened while Rosila Ahmad, 32, whose house was also damaged
said she quickly gathered her four children and ran out of the house when the
petai tree fell on her house.
